Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) - original Gouache. Beethoven - Göbel, E. F. [C. Jäger]. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827). German, 1897. Original 19th century Gouache after an 1870 painting by C. Jäger. 48 x 34,5 cm. Outer margins slightly frayed only. Extraordinary work with fresh impression of the signature face of this timeless composer.

Gouache, also spelled guache, is a type of paint consisting of pigment, a binding agent (usually gum arabic), and sometimes added inert material, designed to be used in an opaque method. It also refers to paintings that use this opaque method. The name derives from the Italian guazzo. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk is also present. This makes gouache heavier and more opaque, with greater reflective qualities. (Wikipedia).

Ludwig van Beethoven (baptised 17 December 1770 – 26 March 1827) was a German composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. His best known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 concertos for piano, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets. He also composed other chamber music, choral works (including the celebrated Missa Solemnis), and songs.

Born in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and part of the Holy Roman Empire, Beethoven displayed his musical talents at an early age and was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and Christian Gottlob Neefe. During his first 22 years in Bonn, Beethoven intended to study with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and befriended Joseph Haydn. Beethoven moved to Vienna in 1792 and began studying with Haydn, quickly gaining a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. He lived in Vienna until his death. In about 1800 his hearing began to deteriorate, and by the last decade of his life he was almost totally deaf. He gave up conducting and performing in public but continued to compose; many of his most admired works come from this period. (Wikipedia)

"Up to the end of the nineteenth century, Germany largely perceived itself as 'the nation of poets and philosophers.' But with the enormous popularity of Schubert and Wagner, this began to change. Suddenly, the composers also began to play a greater role in theories of national identity, and music theory became a important element of German thought. The essays in this volume reflect this, and are by a range of writers: Adorno, Bloch, Thomas Mann, Wackenroder, Herder, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Hegel, Bettina von Arnim, Nietzsche, Max Weber, Brecht and others." (Publisher)

Peellaert, Rock Dreams. Peellaert, Guy / Cohn, Nik. Rock Dreams. Introduction by Michael Herr. London, Pan Books Ltd., 1982. 29.5cm x 22.5cm. 178 pages. With illustrations. Original Softcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear, such as bumped edges.

Life is but a rock 'n' roll dream. Over thirty years ago, artist Guy Peellaert teamed up with author Nik Cohn to create this fantasy tribute to Rock 'n' Roll and R&B. Through surreal texts and images, Cohn and Peellaert paint an imaginary world where the great gods of mid-century popular music appear in their own settings (The Drifters under the boardwalk, Otis Redding on the dock of the bay, The Beach Boys on the beach). Here, rock music is a ""secret society, an enclosed teen fantasy"" treated with the same kind of passion and obsession famously generated by the most fanatic of lovesick, pimply adolescents. All of the founding heroes of rock, soul, and pop appear in Peellaert and Cohn's colorful hallucinations, including Buddy Holly, Elvis, Ray Charles, Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, and many more. Taschen's revival of this unique book comes at a time when rock is making a strong comeback and young musicians are taking inspiration from the very stars featured in rock dreams. (Amazon).
