Abelard, A Dialogue of a Philosopher with a Jew and a Christian. Abelard, Peter. A Dialogue of a Philosopher with a Jew and a Christian. Translated by Pierre J. Payer. Toronto, Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, 1979. 14 x 20.5cm. 183 pages. Original softcover. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Pre-owner's bookplate affixed to inside cover. [Mediaeval Sources In Translation, No. 20].

Peter Abelard was a medieval French scholastic philosopher, theologian and preeminent logician. His love for, and affair with, Héloïse d'Argenteuil have become legendary. The general importance of Abelard lies in his having fixed more decisively than anyone before him the scholastic manner of philosophizing, with the object of giving a formal, rational expression to received ecclesiastical doctrine. Though his particular interpretations may have been condemned, they were conceived in essentially the same spirit as the general scheme of thought afterwards elaborated in the 13th century with approval from the heads of the Church. It was in ethics that Abelard showed greatest activity of philosophical thought. He stressed the subjective intention as determining, if not the moral character, at least the moral value, of human action. [wikipedia]

[Bible] Brown, Self-Interpreting Family Bible, Containing the Old and New Testam [Bible] Brown, Rev. John. Self-Interpreting Family Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments; to which are annexed an extensive introduction, copious marginal references, marginal readings, and illustrations. With an exact summary of the several books and an analysis of the contents. London, Thomas Kelly, 1847. 22 x 28.5cm. Part One: 1047 pages / Part Two: 501 pages, with illustrations from steel engravings. Original leatherbound hardcover with gilt lettering and marbled endpapers and edges. Stronger signs of external wear to spine and edges but binding solid and internal text and illustrations in very good condition.

John Brown of Haddington (1722 – 1787), was a Scottish divine and author. His works include “The Self-Interpreting Bible”, “The Dictionary of the Bible”, and “A General History of the Christian Church”. The Self Interpreting Bible was Brown's most significant work, and it remained in print (edited by others), until well into the twentieth century. The objective of providing a commentary for ordinary people was very successful. The idea that the Bible was "self-interpreting" involved copious marginal references, especially comparing one scriptural statement with another. Brown also provided a substantial introduction to the Bible, and added an explication and "reflections" for each chapter. This edition, published in 1847, contains numerous beautifully detailed illustrations from steel engravings.

Carus, The Real St. Nicholas: Tales of Generosity and Hope from around the World. Carus, Louise. The Real St. Nicholas: Tales of Generosity and Hope from around the World. Illinois / Chennai, Quest Books, 2002. 17.5 x 24.5cm. (13), 214 pages, with illustrations throughout. Original softcover. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Handwritten dedication by the author to the previous owner on title page.

This charming volume presents little-known legends and tales about St. Nicholas from Russia, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Germany, Holland, France, Italy, and Armenia----to name a few of the countries represented in this book. While slimmer than jolly old Santa, the historical saint is much larger in character. Celebrated as protector of the wronged and patron saint of children, Nicholas is, in essence, a Western bodhisattva: an enlightened being who serves those in need. This book restores him as an important lost archetype of the Wise Old Man, clustering stories according to such appealing themes as rescuing, nurturing, outwitting evil, and healing. Louise Carus spent two years researching and translating material to bring us this collection. It will delight parents, educators, community organizers, story lovers, and others eager to decommercialise and resanctify the holidays. [Quest Books]
