[Latimer, Collection of eleven titles from the private library
Collection of eleven titles from the private library of legendary publisher Ronald Lane Latimer and other sources. The collection includes unsigned, signed and inscribed copies of publications by Latimer and other writers. The collection includes: Position I - The New Broom and Morningside. Volume I, Nos. 2, 3 and 4 (all edited by James G. Leippert (Ronald Lane Latimer). / Position II - 'Alcestis': A Poetry Quarterly - Volume I, No.1 (including The first publication of Wallace Stevens's 'The Idea of Order at Key West', 'Three Poems' by John Peale Bishop / 'The Indian Girl Serenades Jonathan' by S.Foster Damon / 'Threnos' by Robert Fitzgerald / 'Four Poems' by Willard Maas / 'Inbetweentimes' by Herbert Read) and Volume I, No.4 (the so-called "Revolutionary Number" with poems by William Carlos Williams: 'Fine Work with Pitch and Copper' / 'The Poet and the ody Politic' by Ruth Lechlitner and others) - 'Alcestis' ceased to continue after this number. [Volume I with wrappers detached / Volume II frayed and slightly stained] / Position III: Ronald Lane Latimer's personal copy of Erskine Caldwell's 'We Are The Living'. Inscribed by Erskine Caldwell: 'for Martin Jay with the best wishes - Erskine Cadlwell' - Interesting: Latimer received this inscription under the first pseudonym he chose (Martin Jay) and verso the titlepage he reveals in a beautifully vain statement that one of the stories in the book, 'Crown Fire', first appeared in one of the publications he edited. He also uses this manuscript entry to resolve his pseudonym - he writes: 'Crown fire - first appeared in Lion + Crown # 2 (March, 1933), edited by me - James G. Leippert (Martin Jay)' / Position IV: Association copy of 'Minute Particulars' by John Peale Bishop - printed by Alcestis Press in New York in 1935. Inscribed by publisher Ronald Lane Latimer to Samuel Foster Damon on the endpaper: 'S.Foster Damon as always - from Latimer - Jan 21/36' - This is one of only 20 signed copies in roman numerals (No.IV) out of a signed total limited edition of overall 165. [Twenty copies numbered I-XX were printed on Duca di Modena. Designed and printed by Lew Ney with Inkunabula Type set by hand]./ Position V: Wallace Stevens - Ideas of Order - First Trade Edition - New York / London - Alfred A. Knopf, 1936. Unclipped 2 USD dustjacket in protective Mylar. Unusually excellent condition in protective Mylar. From the library of shipping magnate Clifton Waller Barrett, with his Exlibris tipped-in to front free endpaper(a superb copy with the beautifully glowing striped cloth binding) / Position VI: Wallace Stevens - Harmonium.
