Piñera, René's Flesh.

Piñera, Virgilio. René's Flesh. Translated by Mark Schafer. Foreword by Antón Arrufat. Boston, Eridanos Press, 1989. 21.8cm x 14.5cm. 256 pages. Original hardcover with dustjacket in protective Mylar. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear.

Impossible to categorize, resistant to facile description, the work of the great cuban writer Virgilio Piñera showed over forty years ago the extreme cultural heterogeneity characteristic of today's postmodern fiction, combining traits typically (if not steroetypically) associated with Latin American writing - lyricism, excess, violence, the absurd -, the rigor of his metaphors and his abstract intelligence show the imprint of the European modernist tradition. Add to this a form of irony and an enormous comic gift that seem to come from nowhere...

René's Flesh, the first of Piñera's novels to appear in English (in a translation of great liveliness by the American translator and poet Mark Schafer), narrates the twenty year old René's initiation to his father's bizzare cult of flesh.
