"Strictly speaking, 'Dream Street' was the stretch of Broadway that lay on West 27th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. It was full of theatrical hotels, rooming houses, restaurants and speakeasies, and was peopled with hand bookies, horse players and fight managers - with 'burlesque dolls and hoofers, and guys who write songs, and saxphone players, and newboys, and newspaper scribes, and tax-drivers,...and blondes with Pomeranian pooches.
What all these people had in common was their gab, which, Damon's words, was apt to be very dreamy indeed: 'In fact,' he wrote, 'it sometimes sounds very pipe- dreamy.' There on the strees were horse players dreaming of big killings in the races; fight mangers dreaming of raising chmpions, and vaudeville actors dreaming about how 'they will practically assassinate the public...if they ever get the chance.'"
