Duggan, Summer in the Gravel Pit.

Duggan, Maurice. Summer in the Gravel Pit. First Edition. London, Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1965. 8°. 176 pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket. In protective Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear.

Maurice Duggan ranks among New Zealand’s greatest exponents of short fiction, despite his small output. He counted Frank Sargeson as a mentor, yet never adopted Sargeson’s colloquial style, instead displaying a lifelong impatience with conventional form. His 1957 Falter Tom and the Water Boy was one of the first internationally successful New Zealand children’s books. In 1960, Duggan was the second recipient of the Burns Fellowship. He took a break from advertising work, at which he enjoyed great success, when he held the Scholarship in Letters in 1966. His Collected Stories was published posthumously in 1981. (bookcouncil)
