The Time Traveller - Rare Books & Modern Thought

The Dream: Bookshops vs. Xenophobia

The Time Traveller’s Bookshop is now at three locations along the dramatic west coast of Ireland and our confidence is growing that we are on the right path to bring international visitors and locals alike together in the calm and relaxing environment of our shops.

After a decade of bookshops closing all over the world, our dream is to repopulate the world with bookshops in remote areas and cities alike. Antiquarian, second-hand, specialist, no matter what kind of independent bookshop…we believe these rooms are important, rather essential spaces to give everyone a choice to learn the unexpected, find books they never knew existed, learn how important diversity is and overcome the greatest threat of our times: xenophobia. If you think your area needs one of these bookshops or you want to open your own indie bookshop, talk to us.

The Time Traveller - Rare Books & Modern Thought

The Time Traveller - Rare Books & Modern Thought

An independent magazine for independent minds. This new, printed, XL quarterly magazine has been designed for readers, collectors, scholars, researchers all over the world. Including ideas that should have been implemented, writers that should have been heard. We will have interesting articles written by private collectors, scholars, young and seasoned readers. You will find fresh reviews of older and forgotten publications and we show unusual, high resolution images of etchings, maps, rare books and autographs as well as original manuscripts. The aim is to unite all with an interest in forgotten books and nearly forgotten writers. In each issue: Specialist booksellers as well as real bookshops in remote and urban areas all over the world are featured.

Hodgson, [Manuscript] Journal of a Voyage between Liverpool and New York 1874.

Hodgson, George G. [Charlotte Bronte / Clement Lingley Wragge (Meteorologist) / George Albert Frost (Artist)]. [Manuscript] Journal of a Voyage between Liverpool and New York 1874. A remarkable journal kept by a newly qualified surgeon of his 1874 trip to New York after 'passing my Primary examinations for the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons' before starting to practice in the autumn The journal contains a profusion of vividly rendered and highly unconventional detail about life in America's metropolis including a visit to the cells at New York Police Headquarters, a dramatisation of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre on Broadway which prompts a foray by Hodgson into dramatic criticism ('If Miss Charlotte Bronte could have seen the play, she would have had some difficulty in recognising it as an adaptation of her own novel') and finally the return passage spent in the intoxicating company of a future White Mountains artist and a young man destined to become a leading Australian meteorologist, breaking off in the middle of a storm at sea: 'a wall of water... approaches with terrible rapidity, and shifting the ship on the side, makes her shiver from stem to stern, while the great mass falls with a crash onto the deck, and sweeps all before it into the dark and hungry ocean beyond.' New York, 1874. Octavo. 32 pages Original Softcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. The Journal is accompanied by a very misleading replica of a wonderful whalers scrimshaw (the scrimshaw comes from a different source and was not originally part of this journal).

Petrarca, Franciscus [Petrarch, Francesco] / Gesualdo, Andrea / Morton, Albertus / Wotton, Henry / Fratelli Nicolini da Sabio. Il Petrarcha con La Spositione di M. Giovanni Andrea Gesualdo / I Trionfi del Petrarcha con la Spositione di M. Giovanni Andrea Gesualdo da Traetto. [Venetia], Domenico Giglio, 1553. 8°. 2 parti in 1 vol. (22), 346, (72) pp. with two woodcut - titlepages and 6 woodcuts within the "Trionfi", all by Fratelli Nicolini da Sabio. Hardcover / Modern full Morocco. The poetry of Petrarch for his beloved Laura, accompanied by the commentary of Gesualdo in an edition of 1553 which was presented as an early seventeenth century diplomatic gift by the assistant to the British Ambassador in Venice Sir Henry Wotton, Sir Albertus Morton. The book has recently been recased in blind crushed crimson morocco with new endpapers. There is some staining to the last few leaves and some staining to the last few gatherings of the volume. The evidence of the diplomatic gift is found in the 17 line formal Italian gift inscription opposite the engraved title page, written and signed by Sir Albertus Morton, Secretary (and nephew) to Sir Henry Wotton. Dell'Ecellenza vostra Divotissimo servitore, 4.1.2. Alberto Mortoni'. / The gist of this is that Morton can no longer restrain his desire to present two strangers, presumably foreigners to his patron, knowing that he is the protector of the virtuous, of pilgrims and of writers, and that he will take particular care of them, since they have been exiled from their homeland. These two English emigres presumably came to the notice of Wotton and Morton during their posting to Venice between 1604 and 1609. The friendship between the two men is described by Izaak Walton as he quotes from a letter in his 'Life of Sir Henry Wotton' in which the older man recalls his nephew as 'dearer to me than mine own being', and of course subsequently penned his elegy 'Tears mourned at the grave of Sir Albertus Morton'. Wotton's career, as evidenced in this diplomatic gift, was spent implementing James I's ambition for wider European influence but later overshadowed by his aphorism that an 'Ambassador is an honest gentleman sent abroad to lie for the good of his country.' Perhaps his espousal of the cause of two exiles is evidence of this apparent duplicity.

Suarez, De Simonia - Original manuscript

Suarez, Francisco. De Simonia - Contemporary, original manuscript of Francisco Suarez work "De Simonia". ca.1580-1620. 8°. 93 leaves ((2), 188 pages). Hardcover / Original pigskin. Very good condition with only minor split to upper hinge. Some external wear. Faint dampstain to lower margins. The manuscript seems to be either a compendium of excerpts related to Suarez' "De Simonia" or even an outline of the work. While it looks like a personal selection, a summary of chapters of the writer, the irregular corrrespondence of chapters between the manuscript and the finished work, allows us to speculate on this manuscript being a possible draft. The manuscript is quarto sized in contemporary vellum with the title penned on an upper spine compartment and the number 41 at the foot of the spine. The manuscript has a title page stating 'De Simonia' which precedes the 93 leaf treatise and is followed by two leaves of 'Index Capitum, que in hoc continentur tractatu'. The manuscript is in a regular forward sloping scribal hand with between 20 and 25 lines per page. The text is divided into 39 chapters. The Index reads: Index Capitum que in hoc continentur tractatu: I - Quid sit Simonia et uncle dicatur (identical with Chapter I of Suarez' "De Simonia" / II - Affectur divisio Simonie / III - An in peccato simoniae sit tantium malitia contra religionem an etiam contra justitiam (identical with chapter IV of "De Simonia) etc. / XVI An Beneficia Ecclesiastica sint materia Simonia Jure Divina nel Jure Ecclesiastico etc., etc. / Images of the work and the Index on request.
